چکیده

This investigation was part of a study of kyphoscoliosis. Its objective was to determine the functional alterations in the chest cage and lung. These problems have, as we indicate in a brief review, already aroused considerable interest. However, our approach has differed from that of most previous workers in several respects. Our patients were both children (Caro and Gucker, 1958) and adults. We were thus able to compare these two groups and to make some assessment of the natural progress of the condition. Our investigations were centred on the mechanics of breathing, an aspect which seemed to us to be of the greatest significance. Finally, we have supplemented our measurements on patients with experimental studies on normal man (Caro, Butler, and DuBois, 1960; Butler, Caro, Alcala, and DuBois, 1960). From our findings we have attempted to describe both the nature and sequence of development of the underlying physiological disturbances.

Influence of spinal deformity on pulmonary function, arterial blood gas values, and exercise capacity in thoracic kyphoscoliosis.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of thoracic spine curvature on lung parameters in kyphoscoliosis. METHODS Twenty-one patients with kyphoscoliosis were evaluated at the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, Delhi, India from January to June 2006 using spirometry, arterial blood gas (ABG), and 6-minute walk test. The degree of spinal deformity was measured by Cobb`s method for angle of scolios...

Unexpected longevity in patients with severe kyphoscoliosis.

The threat of premature death in the fourth or fifth decades of life from cardiorespiratory failure in kyphoscoliosis is well known. Ten patients with severe kyphoscoliosis (curves greater than 100 degrees), who had survived into their seventh decade free of cardiorespiratory failure, were encountered over a four-year period. Pulmonary function studies on five patients showed impaired chest bel...

TITLE: Randomized controlled trial of exercise training in chronic respiratory failure due to kyphoscoliosis

Background: Research has provided evidence for the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of exercise training in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, little is known about the impact of exercise training in patients with chronic respiratory failure due to kyphoscoliosis. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of an exercise training program on exercis...

Preoperative Halo-Gravity Traction for Severe Thoracic Kyphoscoliosis Patients from Tibet: Radiographic Correction, Pulmonary Function Improvement, Nursing, and Complications

BACKGROUND This study investigated the outcomes of preoperative HGT as an adjunct treatment for severe thoracic kyphoscoliosis, its role in radiographic correction, and pulmonary function improvement, together with nursing strategy and incidence of complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eleven patients with a mean age of 18.8 years were retrospectively reviewed. Inclusion criteria were: patients w...

Ambulatory oxygen therapy in stable kyphoscoliosis.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may benefit from ambulatory oxygen; however, the effect of exercise on arterial oxygen saturation (Sa,O2) in patients with kyphoscoliosis and of correction with ambulatory oxygen have not been previously reported. Twelve patients with stable kyphoscoliosis (mean (SD) Cobb angle 79 (26) degrees) were studied, with mean (SD) arterial oxyg...

Pulmonary rehabilitation improves exercise capacity in subjects with kyphoscoliosis and severe respiratory impairment.

BACKGROUND Patients with kyphoscoliosis and severe respiratory impairment frequently experience reduction in exercise tolerance, limitation in daily life activities, and deterioration in health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) as an add-on treatment to long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) was shown to improve symptoms and HRQOL in these patients. Pulmonary rehabilitatio...
